Earthquake and Tsunami
October 16th, 2008One of the biggest natural disasters in recorded history took place in 2004 when the strongest earthquake in 40 years resulted in a tsunami that hits the entire Indian Ocean region.
The 9.3 magnitude earthquake (as measured on the Richter scale), epicentered just off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, generated enormous tsunami waves that crashed into the coastal areas of a number of nations including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. The coastal areas were worst affected and many tourists from European countries and North America died or were missing.
The official death toll in the affected countries was more than 180,000
