One of the biggest natural disasters in recorded history took place in 2004 when the strongest earthquake in 40 years resulted in a tsunami that hits the entire Indian Ocean region.

The 9.3 magnitude earthquake (as measured on the Richter scale), epicentered just off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, generated enormous tsunami waves that crashed into the coastal areas of a number of nations including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. The coastal areas were worst affected and many tourists from European countries and North America died or were missing.

The official death toll in the affected countries was more than 180,000

2004 was designated as :
* International Year of Rice by the United Nations
* 2004 World Health Day topic was Road Safety by World Health Organization
* Year of the Monkey  according to the Chinese calendar.
